Nepali School

Mission and Details

The heritage language is an integral part of multi-cultural community organizations. These languages play a significant role in practicing cultures, engaging the multigenerational population, and promoting and preserving cultural heritage.

The Nepali community in Winnipeg recognizes the importance of its ancestral language “Nepali” and has been running Nepali language classes for young children since 2011.

Nepali language school was started as an independent organization under the name Nepal Language and Cultural Center (NLCC), although it was fully supported by NCSM.

Nepali School formally integrated with NCSM in 2024 and has been running as part of NCSM since then. This volunteer-based initiative is led by the parents of young children from the Nepali community. Although the Nepali language classes are primarily designed to teach young children, they are open to all interested individuals within and outside the Nepali community in Winnipeg.

In the past, even adult Canadians attended these classes intending to learn the Nepali language and culture, believing it would be beneficial when visiting Nepal. The Nepali language classes follow the Winnipeg school year calendar and run every Saturday for two hours from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (from September to June) at the Hindu Society of Manitoba facility, located at 999 St. Anne’s Road, Winnipeg.

During the first hour (10:00 am to 11:15 am), students learn the Nepali language in the classroom. The following 15 minutes are dedicated to practicing cultural music and dances, and the last 30 minutes allow students to socialize with their peers while enjoying snacks.
